This lassi recipe introduces you to a delicious and healthy summer beverage made with fresh strawberries and Greek yogurt.

Though it’s not officially summer quite yet, the fluctuating temperatures here in Toronto demand healthy drinks recipes to stay cool. In my role as a dietitian, I have been creating a new summertime drink in my kitchen. Building on the popularity of my falooda recipe, I now present a strawberry lassi as an alternative to the classic mango lassi – which we also adore!

Why you’ll love this refreshing Indian drink

  • Made with fresh strawberries, it’s a charmingly tart and sweet treat.
  • This sweet lassi recipe is simple and allows you to make either a large quantity or just one serving with ease.
  • You can add a small amount of sweetener to adjust the sweetness to your taste.
  • The absence of added sugar makes it a healthier option, especially for those with diabetes and heart disease, since traditional versions are laden with added sugar.

Our family loves sipping strawberry lassi to celebrate our love for the fruit, no matter the season, though lassi is often associated with summer. The blend of berries and yogurt gives a delightful sweet-tangy taste that makes for a refreshing lassi. Thanks to the Greek yogurt – which also provides some protein – this lassi recipe is a winner!

What is a lassi drink?

The recipe for lassi is actually quite simple and easy to make. It is a cold beverage from India and Pakistan, specifically Punjab, made with yogurt, ice, and sugar. It comes in both sweet and savory varieties. Sweetened versions typically include fruit or fruit pulp such as mango pulp and may also contain rose water and cardamom for added flavor.

Nutrition highlights

This strawberry yogurt drink is packed with nutrients and health-promoting ingredients, including:

  • Dietary fibre, potassium and vitamin C from the strawberries
  • Calcium, magnesium and zinc from the Greek yogurt

What is strawberry lassi made of?

Here’s all you need to make sweet strawberry lassi:

A collection of food ingredients like fresh strawberries, yogurt and water on a bamboo place mat.
  • Fresh strawberries – Ripe strawberries work best in this Indian yogurt drink. However, if you decide to use frozen strawberries, there’s no need to thaw them. Just make sure you use a high-speed blender.
  • Greek yogurt – While traditional lassi recipes call for regular yogurt, the creaminess of Greek yogurt is quite heavenly. Plus, the extra protein helps to create a more filling recipe. Remember to opt for unsweetened Greek yogurt and use it straight out of the refrigerator. That way, your lassi will be nice and chilled.
  • Erythritol – If you’re looking to control your intake of added sugar – without compromising on sweetness, erythritol is one type of sweetener to consider. It does not raise blood sugar levels and is an appropriate alternative as part of a diabetes diet.
  • Water – To help achieve a luscious consistency.

Commonly ask question (You asked:)

Is lassi good for health?

Incorporating strawberries into your daily diet may have health benefits, according to a randomized controlled trial published in 2021. The study found that the nutrients in strawberries can improve the function of blood vessels and lower blood pressure.

Previous research suggests that consuming a minimum of 1.5 cups of strawberries per week can reduce the risk of a heart attack by 34%. This is possibly due to the fact that strawberries contain antioxidants, fiber, potassium, and folate.
