Student Testimonials

Shahzadi is incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about what she does. Her passion towards food, nutrition, health, and helping others is contagious. As an individual pursuing a career as a registered dietitian, I consider myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to be one of Shahzadi’s student volunteers. She is an energetic and supportive leader who is more than willing to share her wealth of expertise. Working with Shahzadi not only allowed me to explore my deep interest in online nutrition communication, but also to further enhance my skills in this area.

Alexandra Burghardt

I graduated from the University of Toronto in 2013 with a BSc in Nutritional Sciences and Psychology. As U of T is not accredited by Dietitians of Canada, I enrolled in the Food and Nutrition program at Ryerson so that I could be eligible to apply for the dietetic internship and eventually go on to pursue a career as a registered dietitian. Experience is an essential component of any internship application and so I quickly started to look for opportunities that would complement my studies. I was fortunate enough to land a position at Accent on Nutrition* at the beginning of my first year at Ryerson. My experience at Accent on Nutrition* has surpassed all my expectations. I have had the opportunity totransform my theoretical understanding of concepts in nutrition into something more tangible. The guidance and mentorship from Shahzadi Devje and Sanja Petrovic is beyond compare. Not only are they generous with constructive feedback and sharing their own experiences, they have also created an environment where students are free to express their creativity. In my last year at Ryerson, I applied and was accepted to the MPH- Nutrition and Dietetics program at U of T. I can say with complete confidence that my experiences at Accent on Nutrition* played a substantial role in the success of my application.

Niloufar Deilami

I recently graduated from Ryerson University with an Honours BASc in Nutrition and Food. I joined Accent on Nutrition* in August 2012 to extend my experience in the wonderful world of nutrition and food. To date I have had the opportunity to do resource development, shadow patient consultations as well as developing patient nutrition analysis reports. These experiences have truly allowed me to learn a great deal about community and consulting dietetics in addition to realizing where my interests lie and what I would like to focus on in the future. Shahzadi has been an excellent preceptor and leader as her passion and drive for nutrition and food have inspired me to do my best on every project. Accent on Nutrition* has encouraged me to become a critical thinker as well as encouraging me to foster an independent and creative mind. Although very new, I have found this opportunity to be far more enriching with regards to my learning and I am looking forward to the rest of my journey at Accent on Nutrition* with great excitement!

Shahzadi’s enthusiasm and drive for providing an enriching, supportive, and challenging learning environment has helped me, as her mentee, to realize many professional and personal goals. Moreover, her strong leadership skills have enabled me to further strengthen critical thinking, reflection, and communication skills in a respectful environment. Our mutual hunger for continuous learning, eagerness in sharing nutrition and health knowledge with others, and a fervent desire to improve the health of others has only strengthened our working relationship to date.

Sanja Petrovic

As a student in third year, at the University of Guelph in the Human Nutrition program, I was looking for unique opportunities in which I could apply the skills and knowledge I have gained throughout the years of my undergraduate studies. This led me to a hands-on dietetic student position at Accent on Nutrition*, under the directorship of Shahzadi Devje, which is unlike any other volunteer experiences I have had. Through observations in patient consultations and interdisciplinary teamwork, as well as the exposure to the different roles within a private dietetic practice, I am constantly challenged to reflect and think critically, as a professional. Various tasks, such as recipe development, creating seasonal nutrition newsletters, and online updates through the social media, has allowed me to not only directly apply the textbook and classroom skills I have obtained from my studies, but to also develop and gain further knowledge that I can use efficiently as a student, and hopefully as a Registered Dietitian in the near future. Additionally, Shahzadi provides very insightful feedback and guidance, which I believe has contributed to my growth in humility as a student. After eight months under the mentorship of Shahzadi Devje, I can say with confidence, that I am entering my final year of my undergraduate studies with a much greater understanding in the field of dietetics, in addition to strengthened skills, both of which, I can attribute to my experience with Shahzadi.
